Recognizing impure skin

This is how you can tell that your skin has problems

Impure skin usually appears as pimples, blackheads, enlarged and more visible pores, and an oily shine – often accompanied by redness or inflammation. The causes can vary – hormonal fluctuations, stress, or diet can have short-term effects on our skin and well-being. Chronic impure skin, on the other hand, usually requires targeted, long-term care. Oily skin and combination skin are particularly affected, as they produce more sebum and the pores clog more quickly.

Causes of impure skin on the face

Hormonal fluctuations

Hormones play a crucial role in sebum production. Especially during (strong) hormonal changes, such as during puberty, but also every month during the cycle, in pregnancy, after childbirth, or during menopause, the skin can become unbalanced. The resulting increased sebum production quickly clogs pores in combination with dead skin cells, which promotes pimples and blackheads.

Environmental factors & pollutants

Fine dust, UV radiation, or climate changes also affect the skin from the outside. They promote oxidative stress and weaken the skin barrier. The result: inflammation, redness, and increased impurities.

Nutrition and Lifestyle

Sugar, dairy products, and highly processed foods can affect hormone balance and promote inflammation – and this quickly shows on our skin. But stress, lack of sleep, or smoking also disrupt metabolism and cause the skin to become more unsettled and prone to pimples. You can read more about this in our article Beautiful Skin from Within.

Incorrect or insufficient care

Too aggressive products, frequent mechanical exfoliations, or the wrong combination of skincare products quickly disrupt the skin's balance. Often, it responds with even more sebum production, dryness, or irritation.

Medications and Diseases

Medications can also affect the skin's appearance – for example, cortisone, certain antibiotics, or hormone preparations. Additionally, skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, or seborrheic dermatitis can present with similar symptoms. If the skin remains persistently unsettled, a dermatological examination may be advisable.

Facial care for impure skin: The best products & ingredients

Facial cleansing for impure skin

A daily cleansing in the morning and evening is perhaps the most important step in the skincare routine for impure skin. Very important: It’s best to use mild, soap-free formulations! These can thoroughly remove excess sebum, dirt, and Make-up without causing additional strain. Because even if you feel like you need to cleanse especially well now: impure skin is not “dirty.” Cleansing too often or too harshly can dry out the skin and stimulate sebum production even more.

Care creams & lotions for impure skin

Because even impure skin needs moisture! Oil-free, non-comedogenic creams and fluids help to stabilize the skin's balance. It is important to choose formulations that are not too rich, but rather to rely on light textures with soothing ingredients.

Masks and treatments for clear skin

Clay masks or chemical peels with salicylic or glycolic acid can clear clogged pores and make the skin appear smoother. Used once or twice a week, they help regulate excess sebum and refine the skin's texture.

Ingredients that work against pimples and blackheads

The best ingredients for impure skin are:

  • Salicylic acid (BHA): Dissolves dead skin cells and clears pores.

  • Niacinamide: Strengthens the skin barrier and has anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Zinc: Regulates sebum production.

  • Retinol, or even better retinal: Supports cell renewal and fights clogged pores.

  • AHA complex: Refines pores, provides moisture, and creates a smoother, more even skin texture.

Anti-pimple routine – how to get clear skin

Step 1: Gentle cleansing

Ideal for daily cleansing are mild, pH-neutral, and soap-free cleansers that thoroughly but gently clean the skin. Important: Use lukewarm water – hot water dries out the skin – and cleanse morning and evening to reliably remove sebum, Make-up, and the dirt particles of the day.

Step 2: Care with the right active ingredients

When it comes to skincare: less is more, but using the right products is crucial.

In the morning, impure skin mainly needs protection and balance. Light formulations with niacinamide, antioxidants, and moisturizers like hyaluronic acid or glycerin strengthen the skin barrier, regulate sebum production, and prevent new inflammations. Daily sun protection is also extremely important for impure skin. It not only protects against UV-induced inflammations that worsen blemishes but also against acne marks and hyperpigmentation.

In the evening, the focus is on regeneration. After cleansing, active ingredients like BHA (salicylic acid) are ideal for unclogging pores and reducing blemishes. Retinal supports skin renewal, has antibacterial effects, and can visibly smooth the skin’s appearance. Zinc or azelaic acid also soothe inflamed skin areas and help reduce redness. A light, non-comedogenic night care product completes the routine and ensures the skin can regenerate overnight.

Step 3: Weekly Care & Masks

In addition to your daily skincare routine, it’s worth giving your skin some extra care once or twice a week. Clay masks absorb excess sebum and help clear pores – perfect if you tend to have shine or blemishes. Chemical peels with BHA (salicylic acid) or AHA (e.g., lactic acid or glycolic acid) promote cell renewal, remove dead skin flakes, and prevent new blemishes from forming.

It’s important not to overdo it: a gentle peel once a week is more than enough – too much peeling can irritate the skin and even stimulate sebum production. After masks or peels, be sure to nourish your skin with moisturizer or soothing serums to restore balance.

Conclusion: The ideal care for impure skin

Impure skin is a burden, no question. But with a consistent, gentle care routine, you can do a lot – because impure skin doesn't have to be a permanent condition. Pay attention to products that strengthen your skin barrier instead of irritating it, and take the time to really understand your skin. It doesn't need radical solutions, but patience, moisture, and targeted active ingredients that restore its balance.
